Build or Destroy? The Scourge of Collapsing Buildings in Kinshasa

On the night of March 7, 2025, an eight-story building under construction in Mont Ngafula collapsed, adding yet another tragedy to the long list of building failures in Kinshasa. This disaster, though shocking, is not surprising. It is the direct result of a system where disregard for construction standards, the reckless issuance of permits, and the absence of technical oversight have become the norm.

Building at All Costs, Even If It Kills

Everyone wants to build taller. More floors, more profit. But at what cost? In a reckless race towards urbanization, we are sacrificing safety at the altar of greed and irresponsibility. Too often, construction projects are entrusted to unqualified amateurs, unscrupulous contractors, or worse, corrupt networks that exploit weak regulations to erect buildings that will not stand the test of time.

Building Permits: Just a Piece of Paper Without Oversight

How was an eight-story building allowed to rise in an area with already precarious infrastructure, without strict oversight from the relevant authorities? The issuance of building permits has become a mere administrative formality—a document granted without serious soil studies, without structured plans, without any guarantee of compliance with construction standards.

Permits are signed, work begins… but where are the inspections? Where are the regulators? Urbanization cannot be left to the whims of developers chasing quick profits and lax authorities. Allowing construction to proceed without proper oversight is planting the seeds of inevitable catastrophe.

Technical Studies? Too Often Neglected!

In a serious construction project, every detail matters—soil analysis, load calculations, material quality, seismic compliance, and strict monitoring of works. Yet, these crucial steps are regularly dismissed. Too expensive? Too time-consuming? It doesn’t matter, as long as the building goes up and the money flows in.

This disregard for essential technical requirements inevitably leads to disaster. A building constructed on unstable ground, with substandard cement, and without adherence to load-bearing limits is nothing more than a ticking time bomb. And today, we are witnessing the deadly consequences.

When Legislation Means Nothing but Impunity

We have laws, regulations, and building codes. But are they enforced? Too often, anarchy prevails, and decisions are made behind closed doors. Sanctions against irresponsible developers are either nonexistent or ineffective. The result? Buildings collapse, lives are lost, and the perpetrators disappear into thin air.

It is time to put an end to this silent corruption that endangers the population. It is time to eradicate the widespread incompetence that plagues the construction sector.

Build Responsibly or Don’t Build at All

We must demand that every building be the result of a rigorous process, guided by qualified professionals. A building permit alone is not enough. There must be ongoing monitoring, regular inspections, and a genuine commitment to ensuring occupant safety.

Building collapses are not accidents. They are crimes of negligence. As long as we continue to turn a blind eye, as long as the authorities refuse to take responsibility, we will continue to count the dead beneath the rubble.

Just imagine for a moment that this building had already been inhabited… Would we still have the luxury of indifference?
