NATIONAL SERVICE: A NATION RISING THROUGH WORK AND DISCIPLINE

Among the most ambitious and transformative projects in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the National Service now stands as a major lever of social, economic, and security transformation. Where the State had long left its youth to fend for themselves, the National Service represents a republican revival built on work, training, and pride in belonging to a nation.

Kaniama Kasese: A Symbol of National Reintegration

In the heart of Tanganyika, on the land of Kaniama Kasese, one of the most hopeful stories of modern-day DRC is unfolding. Once unknown to the general public, this National Service center has become the beating heart of a large-scale project: transforming socially excluded youth — former delinquents, street children, ex-« kulunas » — into development actors.

This is not merely a security operation. It is a national rehabilitation project, where young people learn a trade, a way of life, and a sense of purpose. Masonry, carpentry, electricity, livestock, agriculture: thousands of Congolese youth are trained here each year under strict but decent conditions, re-entering society with strong skills and a new sense of self-worth.

A Productive Arsenal Against Hunger

Beyond reintegration, the National Service has also become a strategic economic actor. On 5,000 hectares of maize fields in Kaniama Kasese, the DRC is sowing more than grain: it is sowing its food sovereignty.

25,000 tons of maize are expected by 2025. A clear, methodical target that goes beyond rhetoric and translates into measurable results. This cereal ambition is accompanied by livestock farming — 10,000 head of cattle targeted by the end of 2025 — to meet the country’s growing need for meat and milk.

Where other institutions struggle to plan, the National Service produces, plans, feeds. In a country plagued by food insecurity and massive food imports, this model offers a credible alternative to dependency.

A Civil Army of Builders

Those once marginalized by the system have now become the arms of national reconstruction. Evidence includes the hundreds of school benches produced for public schools, rehabilitated roads, and infrastructure supported by the youth of the National Service.

The National Service is not training soldiers, but citizens enrolled in the fight for development. It shapes a youth that stands tall, responsible, freed from idleness and delinquency — answering the call of the nation not with weapons, but with tools and purpose.

A Presidential Vision in Motion

Backed by President Félix Tshisekedi, this model is set to be replicated in other provinces. It represents a national response to the country’s multidimensional crises: education, youth, food, and identity.

Faced with a void, the National Service offers a doctrine of republican reconstruction: discipline, purpose, unity.
